Upcycling Android phone flashing
2023-11-18 · Repaircafé Oosterbeek · Oosterbeek, Nederland
Every year, manufacturers produce 1.5 billion smartphones worldwide - and unfortunately, probably just as many are thrown away after what is usually a far too short hardware lifespan. E-waste increases every year. The energy required to produce the devices is extremely high, and the manufacturing and supply chain spans the globe several times. With Upcycling Android we address the problem by extending the hardware lifespan of phones and Android devices in particular!

Checking your project for non-inclusive language
2023-09-19 · Open Source Summit Europe - Diversity Empowerment Summit · Bilbao, España
Having become aware about the importance of inclusive language and the relevance for it in Free and Open Source projects, I was looking for a way to check the projects I am involved with. In my search I encountered different tools and word lists, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Eventually I consolidated the knowledge into a CC0-licensed customizable configuration for the Woke tool woke-config-builder. In this brief presentation I'll go over the issue of non-inclusive language, the current tooling landscape, gaps left by the existing solutions and the solution I came up with. With this presentation I hope to inspire others to spend time on the issue of non-inclusive language and work towards solutions that don't require one to become a subject-matter expert.

More Renewable Energy Into the Power Grid with Open Source
2023-09-20 · Open Source Summit Europe 2023 - SustainabilityCon · Bilbao, España · with Jonas van den Bogaard
The rise in renewable energy and the electrification of energy consumption drives the power grid to its limits. Grid operators like Alliander require new digital solutions to better use the capacity that is currently available in the grid. LF Energy's Open Source projects like OpenSTEF, Power Grid Model and Shapeshifter play a key role here. OpenSTEF provides a complete software stack that forecasts the load on the electricity grid for the next hours to days. Given a time series of measured load or generation, a fully automated machine learning pipeline is executed which delivers a probabilistic forecast of load. Power Grid Model is a Python library for steady-state distribution power system analysis. Currently, it supports power flow, and state estimation calculations. Shapeshifter is a protocol and library for the exchange of flexibility between aggregators and grid operators. It facilitates market interactions to resolve grid constraints by applying congestion management or grid capacity management. In this talk, we will tell you more about the OpenSTEF project, Power Grid Model project and Shapeshifter project, and how these projects can work together to help grid operators to increase grid capacity and integrate more renewable energy resources into the power grid.
Open Source in your organisation: 'Open working' in practice with an Open Source Office Programme
2023-06-27 · PublicSpaces · Amsterdam, Nederland · with Koos Steenbergen, Ana Jiménez Santamaría, Corno Vromans, Karel Rietveld
Have you always been curious to get a taste of what 'open working' has to offer? Want to know how you can take the big, abstract ideal of open source and put it into practice at your organisation? During this informative session, we learn from organisations with an open source program office (OSPO) -- a group or department that focuses on the development and use of open source software. Over the course of the talk, you will get to know organisations that have either already set up an OSPO or are working to implement one.
We'll ask questions like: How do you draw up purchasing conditions for open source software? How can you participate in the open source ecosystem and why is that important? What open source licenses are currently available and which ones are important for your organisation? How do you safeguard knowledge and awareness of 'open working' in your organisation?
Organisations from different sectors will briefly present their experiences with open working. Afterwards, we'll divide into groups to pick the experts' brains. By the end, you'll have learnt all you need to know to set up an OSPO in your own organisation!
A new wave of open source at the Dutch government and public sector
2023-04-22 · T-Dose · Geldrop, Nederland
Free and open source software seemed to have disappeared in the Dutch government after the end of the program "Nederland Open in Verbinding" (NOiV)". Nothing is further from the truth, concrete projects remained where an open source collaboration was successful. The last couple of years a number of trends have coincided that have resulted in open source again getting a prominent place in government:
- Increasing reliance on free and open source software in IT
- Call for a more transparent government
- The open source way of working becoming more common
- The rise of the Open Source Program Office (OSPO) as a pattern to establish open source in the IT-organization
In my presentation I'll briefly go over the history of open source in the public sector in the Netherlands, what trends now coincide, how this leads to a new wave of free and open source software at the government and how the community at large can be involved.

How Open Source Helps a Grid Operator with the Challenges of the Energy Transition
2022-09-14 · Open Source Summit Europe - Emerging OS Forum · Dublin, Ireland · with Jonas van den Bogaard
The energy transition poses new challenges to all parties in the energy sector. For grid operators, the rise in renewable energy and the electrification of energy consumption drives the grid to its limits. By using open source, participating in Open Source projects, Open Sourcing internal projects like OpenSTEF and Power Grid model, and being a member of LF Energy, the Dutch Grid Operator Alliander aims to unleash the power of open source collaboration to further the energy transition. OpenSTEF provides a complete software stack that forecasts the load on the electricity grid for the next hours to days. Given a time series of measured load or generation, a fully automated machine learning pipeline is executed which delivers a probabilistic forecast of future load. Power-grid-model is a Python library for steady-state distribution power system analysis. Currently, it supports the following calculations: 1) Symmetric and asymmetric power flow calculation with Newton-Raphson method and linear method, and 2) Symmetric and asymmetric state estimation with an iterative linear method. In this talk, we will tell you more about the OpenSTEF project and Power Grid Model project, and how these projects support the adoption of renewable energy in the Netherlands.

Building an OSPO in the Energy Sector: The Alliander experiences
2022-03-02 · TODO Group OSPOlogy · Online · with Jonas van den Bogaard
Business sponsorship, enthusiasm and going for it. Those three ingredients define Alliander's OSPO. After joining LF Energy and releasing our first open source project under the LF Energy umbrella, we started to recognize the need within Alliander for a group of people with the know-how and mandate to help bring structure and organization to the open source plans. And so some enthusiasts came together and discussed the various open source needs within the company. The OSPO turned out to be an excellent means for this because it created an overview of all open source activities. From there, we started consolidating knowledge, worked on building better open source development practices, familiarized the organization with innersource, improved license compliance, and looked for external opportunities for collaborating via open source. The OSPO as a strategic pillar for change was born. Two years later, here we are. We have released and contributed to many more open source projects, have a functioning Open Source Program Office and are starting to embed the open source mindset in the organization.
In this session, we will tell you more about our OSPO journey, our OSPO ambitions and will be introducing LF Energy.

Free Software in the Dutch public sector
2017-08-07 · SHA - Free Software Foundation Europe Village · Zeewolde, Nederland
Almost 15 years ago now the Dutch government first officially committed to adopting open source software. But what has come of that? Spoiler alert: very little! Especially compared to other countries. That's why it is a recurring theme in politics, as policy does not result in change. In this presentation I'll dig deep and highlight the projects that do meet that initial goal of open source adoption.
What code are you running?
2017-08-05 · SHA - Free Software Foundation Europe Village · Zeewolde, Nederland
When you open up a webpage, or write an e-mail you are dependent on hundreds of libraries and many million lines of code working as expected. Considering your average free software stack, your trust is in the developers and maintainers of the application, the libraries and the distro to do their job. Recently projects were initiated to build a second chain of trust, in the software itself. In my presentation I'll explain why we need to increase the trustworthiness of our systems, and what solutions are being worked on to increase that trust. Some of the projects I'll highlight are Reproducible builds, GuixSD, QubesOS and the L4 kernel.

Energy data: what, how, and why
2017-02-05 · FOSDEM - Lightning Talks · Brussel, België
This lightning talk will provide you with the necessary context and links to start working with energy data in your own projects.
The Smart Grid is coming, at webscale, enabled by Internet of Things, resulting in Big Data. A clear statement, right? Not at all! Let me show you what is going on behind these buzzwords:
- First I'll take you briefly through the analog origins of utility energy data to help you understand why this seems counter-intuitive by modern standards.
- Second I'll go over the driving force for opening up the energy data: why sustainable energy demands it, and how businesses and consumers can benefit.
- Then having created a common understanding of the word of energy data, I'll go over developments in mainly the field of Internet of Things to highlight the potential, but also where it fall short to support renewable energy. I will specifically address practical technologies and frameworks, and some examples of energy data usage.
This lightning talk will provide you with the necessary context and links to start working with energy data in your own projects. As a bonus it will also make you aware of differences inside Europe, as this might be a hindrance in your project.

Open Source has won, now what?
2015-09-28 · T-Dose · Eindhoven, Nederland
Since our last T-DOSE we've got to observe the public confirmation of the success of the Open Source model. It has been called a winner on many occasions and it can be called again, Open Source is a winning innovation model. But now that we know we have our hands on a winning model, which we have done for years, what do we do next?
In our vast Open Source community contributions originate from people in different roles, having similarly different motives. Choosing Open Source for cost reduction is a limited view, the model can bring digital freedom and can ease adoption to grow an ecosystem. Great minds have already analysed these benefits (Benjamin Mako Hill, Simon Wardley), and knowing these benefits for various roles, we can develop our own strategy as a community.
While a lot of great Open Source software is being developed, digital freedom is still threatened. Although the main server and desktop stack is freely available, the hardware and hosted services seem to become less free. At the same time company-backed Open Source development is crafting out strong ecosystems while outpacing efforts to provide free services on their published work. In this light it seems fair to acknowledge that freedom and community strength have to be defended to guarantee the continued existence of our community, our own ecosystem.
So how can we craft our own ecosystem to protect our community, while incorporating the different roles and motives for collaborating? Our ecosystem would have to be based on a set of common values, for which I propose the following: supporting software freedom, building on each others work, ensuring interoperability, low barriers for adoption and contribution, a diversity and continuity of resources, and a community representation in the project lead. But goals and means are no good without commitment, and that's why we have to remain conscious, conscious of the environment and the impact of our own impact as inhabitants of the Open Source community. Question the project lead, question the business model, question the licence, but start by questioning your own actions. We have the resources, the adoption, and above all the innovation model to build the most epic ecosystem around, but despite the abundance of effort we need your effort to end up where you want us to end up.
